Chapter Ten

Potbelly’s Soup Kitchen is always a good idea. A favorite with locals and tourists alike, no one comes to Williamsbridge without indulging in a steaming bowl of Edna’s Vermont Cheddar or Clam Chowder or Tomato Bisque. And if her soups are amazing, her bread is off the charts. She makes all different kinds—mini loaves that are wrapped up and served alongside the soup.

It had been a hectic day, and the evening festivities still lay ahead, so Matthew and I decided to stop in and pick up dinner to go. When we walked in, Edna was just updating the chalkboard menu with the daily specials written in her usual funky chalk letters. She’d just erased Lobster Bisque and we waited while she wrote Cabbage and Bacon with Crispy Garlic Bread Toasts.

“Oh, I’ll have that,” I said when Edna turned from the board and saw us.

“Me too,” said Matthew. “To go please, Edna.”

“Great!” Edna hurried around the counter and started ladling out soup. “Oh—Matthew, could you take a quick peek at the light inside the big refrigerator? It’s on the blink and I wanted to get some advice.”

Matthew looked as puzzled as I did at this slightly odd request, but he nodded and said, “Sure,” then walked to the kitchen behind Edna. A moment later, I could hear Matthew and Edna’s assistant chef, Felix Andersen, shooting the breeze.

Edna quickly leaned across the counter and lowered her voice almost to a whisper. “I’m so glad you came in. I was going to call you.”

“What’s up?”

“Just . . . Did Ed Murphy confront you at all? About”—she looked around to see that no one was nearby— “Miss Smithers?”

“What? No. Why?”

“Well, remember when he was asking us about the identity of Miss Smithers at the reception? Then you went off to dance with Martin, and I—well, I’d had a little too much to drink and I might have given Ed a few hints.”

“About my identity as Miss Smithers?”

Edna nodded solemnly.

“Well, Ed never said anything to me.”

“Good. He seems to be some kind of superfan. I would feel just awful if I’d given you away.”

“And Walter would kill you,” I said with a laugh. “Although I’ll bet that he’s softened up a little, now that he’s in love and getting married.”

Matthew came out of the kitchen and joined me at the counter. “You needed a new bulb in there,” he said. “Felix and I found a few spares. You’re all set.”

“Thank you, Matthew. What a relief!”

Matthew raised a brow at Edna, then at me. “Next time you want to get rid of me so you two can talk, just say so,” he said with a chuckle.

“By the way, how’s the investigation into Ivy’s death going?” asked Edna, quickly changing the subject.

“I haven’t heard much,” I said. “I assumed Dunlap and Potts are on top of it.”

“I don’t mean the police investigation,” said Edna with a snort. “I mean yours.”

Matthew and I looked at each other. “What makes you think—” Matthew started to say, but then gave it up.
